If you’re like me your probably still enjoying the summer. You’re not thinking about colds and the flu. Just wanted to give a quick message on the importance of flu shots.
If you’re over 65, you need a higher dose flu shot. The reason is that you are more susceptible to complications if you get the flu. Most flu related hospitalizations happen in our age group. Also, those most vulnerable to flu related deaths are in our age group. Influenza is a serious problem for us.
Last year my doctor didn’t carry the high dose flu vaccine. This year I have already called ahead and they are giving the high dose to those over 65. The flu vaccine will be available in the second or third week of September at my doctor’s office so, I have put that on my calendar to make sure I have an appointment. Make sure you ask if they will be giving the higher dose flu shot.
Your insurance will pay for flu shots. When I had a PPO insurance I could easily get this at Walgreens that my insurance covered. Now with my HMO, I get the flu shot at the doctor’s office, that my insurance covers as well.
It might be a good idea to ask your doctor about pneumonia and shingles shots.
If you would like more information on the higher dose flu vaccine you can get it at the Center For Disease Control. Here: CDC
We will be ready for the Holidays this year with no worry about getting sick and missing out on all of our traditions.
Have a Healthy season and enjoy the rest of the summer.
